Haunting, crushing, and bleak are a few words that initially come to mind listening to the new album from Finland?s Dead In The Water. So grim and weighty is the music, that one might hastily categorize it as Blackened Doom, yet there is much more to it than that. Their songs are also punctuated by surprisingly avant-garde yet melodic quieter passages and even Alternative Rock sensibilities that don?t detract from the mysterious atmosphere, but rather add an unusual and very appealing element to the music.

Echoes?In The Ruins encompasses six tracks of mostly slower tempo Doom based around lumbering guitar rhythms that periodically give way to simple motifs played on cleaner guitar or keyboards. The vocals are primarily of a blood curdling Black Metal style, although they do also effectively incorporate some Death Metal growling as a harmony or response on many of the tracks. Ghostly whispered vocals and ambient noises are also used to add to the mood. The music as a whole is relatively easy to listen to as it has a strong melodic direction.

Overall, much of their heavier thematic style is not unlike that of their countrymen Swallow The Sun, but they also go well beyond this, at times approaching the sparseness of Funeral Doom while at other moments speeding up to an almost Death Metal gallop, or even veering into completely foreign yet still oddly compatible musical territories. Dead In The Water are also superb masters at incorporating quiet passages to add a greater depth to the songs and it?s these brief yet chillingly tense moments of perhaps only a sustained keyboard note accompanied by a few quietly plucked guitar notes that really stand out. Less restrained by the clich?s of the genre, or any genre for that matter, they experiment by incorporating other styles such as the repetitive strummed chord progressions reminiscent of early 90?s Rock along with a few traces of electronic sounds which add a relatively modern feel to some of the tracks. All of this is done so subtly and smoothly that one barely notices the transitions from one style to another.

I won?t pick any favorite songs as I enjoyed them all, but will instead describe a few of the more interesting moments in their arrangements. The album opener ?The Silent Will Carry On? starts with a simple piano melody before introducing driving rhythms accented by a cleaner lead guitar as a chorus of both shrieked and growled vocals are heard. However, the tempo soon changes and they drop into a quiet and very minimalist section where two guitars play a complementary but very simple melody. It?s so basic, but completely effective in creating a tranquil mood that contrasts with the almost violent horror of the rest of the song. The strangely titled and very esoteric interlude piece ??? features an intentionally quite plain acoustic guitar set against the sounds of bubbling water with eerily hushed almost semi-spoken vocals, that might be the incoherent ramblings of a madman. Heard in the background are some strange rattling sounds, a creaking door, and finally a deep breath?.

The track ?In Disguises? begins with a gradually increasing drum beat and then explodes into a loud driving guitar rhythm slightly reminiscent of Led Zeppelin?s ?Kashmir? melody. Angrily snarled vocals kick in and are followed by a tremolo picked guitar line that darts in and out of the hypnotic melee. The song begins to reach an intense crescendo helped along by the shrill vocals that make it seem as if something sinister is about to happen. And then it all ends rather abruptly, like waking from a nightmare.

The instrumentation on album closer ?Burden? doesn?t resemble extreme Metal at all. Instead, after a reverberating spoken word and piano intro it becomes more of a sludgy somewhat Alternative Rock arrangement employing a repetitive heavy chord progression. Fortunately, both Black and Death Metal vocals serve to anchor it and it?s still perfectly in keeping with the theme of the rest of the album. The song culminates in a wall of feedback and thundering chords as a tribal beat plays on.

Although most of the songs on this album are based on a similar approach of using melodic passages either as an intro or recurring theme, the uniqueness of these is enough to still give each song its own identity. Production-wise, it?s a fairly good sounding headphone-worthy effort with all the instruments being clearly heard, particularly the fine drumming. The digipak is a bit sparse with no booklet included, but the lyrics are printed inside the covers and there is also some attractive yet oddly out of place artwork and fonts that resembles more the type of graphics one might find on a ?Core? album of some sort. Make no mistake, the music is far removed from this and the strange artistry is perhaps just another indicator of how unique and unexpectedly refreshing this album is. Highly recommended for fans of Doom Metal that would like to try something that?s a little more adventurous and that also dabbles with the atmospheric side of the genre.

Schon das Intro atmet mit seinen einsamen Klaviertastenanschl?gen die triste Atmosph?re eines im Wasser treibenden Leichnams. Wenngleich dieser mit den folgenden Gitarrenkl?ngen und dem gekr?chzten Gesang nicht wiederbelebt wird, so scheinen diese musikalischen Zutaten die Vergangenheit zu versinnbildlichen, warum dieser K?rper nun leblos im Wasser treibt. Das Klangbild DEAD IN THE WATERs ist in der Tat von einer unangenehmen K?lte gepr?gt - ob das nun der raue Sound der Gitarren ist, das bedrohlich langsame Tempo oder das b?se, agonische Kr?chzen. Mitunter kommen einem die Anfangszeiten von EYEHATEGOD in den Sinn, doch gar so kakophon sind die Finnen dann auch wieder nicht. Denn die Melodie kommt auf "Echoes... In The Ruins" nur selten zu kurz. Insbesondere in den vereinzelten akustischen Passagen r?hren DEAD IN THE WATER das Tr?nenwasser an, um es dann mit einem kr?ftitgen, doomigen Rhythmus Tropfen f?r Tropfen in die Augen zu klopfen.

Nat?rlich gibt es insbesondere in Skandinavien eine ganze Reihe von Bands ? la DEAD IN THE WATER - und das im Jahr 2000 gegr?ndete Qunitett hebt sich auch nicht durch besondere Merkmale von den Kollegen ab - einmal von der Genre atypischen Cover-Gestaltung abgesehen. Doch der gewisse Anspruch, den man an Death Doom erhebt, wird gut erf?llt. Die Songs transportieren Verzweiflung, K?lte und laden somit zum selbstmitleidigen Versinken ein...

It doesn't happen a lot that a band with a hardcore / metalcore name catches my attention. But in case of Dead in the Water, for some reason, it did. After hearing only but one song on their MySpace, it was clear to me that an album like this would appeal to all my likings - and so it did.

With an opening as mournful as the ending of a dramatic movie, the sound of a piano gloomes in. A perfect beginning of this depraved, yet beautiful album. "The Silent Will Carry On" brings forth the sound of despair, with serious influences of the deathdoom genre vocal-wise and the progressiveness of Pelican with some post-rock tunes. Just when you think the post-rock melody is fading out this song, a riff as thick as fog drones into your ears, and screaming blackish vocals bring "The Silent Will Carry On" to a perfect ending of a perfect song on a perfect album. After that, more of the same brilliance reappears. With "..." a short, accoustic and clean song, the band makes time for a short intermezzo, while waterscape-sounds give their name a very literal meaning. "In Disguises" begins with a very drone-like intro and builds up to short strophes of text that are squealed out by their singer. A serious blend of drones, mixed with deathdoom, sludge and Pelican progressiveness, overflown by blackish vocals are the recipe for this song. The next song is by far my favorite, beginning with a post-rock intro, combined with funeral-like whispers and sighs. A song of solitude, confirmed by lyrics and sound. Emptiness inside silently spreads, you can almost feel the despair. The final song, beginning with a mixture between Isis-alike sounds and -again- Pelican on post-rock, and afterwards exploring the sludge and deathdoom scapes, is more then a genious ending to this wonderful album. A masterpiece for a debut, I love it when that happens!

This experminetal doom album is a mixture of so many doom and post-stuff, that you can almost call it post-doom. Anyhow, fans of Pelican, Isis and Minsk should really check out these guys, but any person who loves doom (from stoner to sludge, from death to drone), is possible to like this.

I wouldn?t suggest inviting people around for a high energy party if you plan on listening to DEAD IN THE WATER?s new album. No, I would suggest a darkened room with candlelight to go along with this superb album of crushing weight and overwhelming gloominess from this Finnish quintet. If someone told me they managed to perfectly mix ISIS along with MORGION, first I?d have laughed, but that is almost precisely what ?Echoes?In The Ruins? is. This is a majestic album with a sweeping venture in to my more and more loved Doom genre.

On the opening cut, ?The Silent Will Carry On?, we are treated to a piano intro which evokes in a truly cheesy analogy, as it seems like what one might hear over a film image of someone, well, dead in the water. The song carries on with a solemn tone of thick, heavy guitar riffs and breathless high vocals that never soar above the ever present drone of gripping guitars and a querying rhythm section which fits the tone expertly as well. Towards the middle of the song it speeds up to a tasty pace that while still on a slower scale, is enough to have you really moving your head in unison. It?s a riff so classic you could easily believe it is actually from a new CANDLEMASS masterpiece, which is how highly I think of it.

The idiosyncratic ??? comes across as a near middle mark of the album, being a beautifully played acoustic number with a quiet flow of water behind it. As you can imagine, it retains the cold, sorrowful tone of the whole album. ?In Disguises? is in principle like the opener, but has its own dark attraction with a slow moving first passage of measured, pounding drums accompanied by melodic twangs and a distant sound of creepy wailings. These passages of melancholy are interrupted a few times with short sessions of as close of a blast as a Doom or Sludge band can export. Then, oh then, just as you feel another discharge of this quick power you instead get such a fucking killer Doom riff it is spectacular. I?m not one prone to hyperbole I don?t think, but this riff is a sumptuous effort of both heaviness and melody. One of the best songs I?ve heard all year, as is the album. The other tracks follow the mix of bands I mentioned above, invoking at times a slow tempo ISIS type crush with a mellow wave reminiscent of recent PELICAN or even one of my other favourite bands of this year, MINSK.

Compare them to who you will, these Finnish Doomers are of a special quality and ?Echoes?In The Ruins? is a significant entry in to 2007?s best of category and hopefully it won?t stop with this year. If you like your Doom with a bit of a punch then get thee to an internet portal where you can find this album.

Primo full-length per i Dead In The Water, band finlandese nata dalle costole dei Sharpeville e autrice di un violento hardcore ad inizio carriera, mentre oggi ci propongono sei brani molto lunghi all?insegna di un melodic doom a tratti persino influenzato parecchio dal death netal. Apre ?Echoes? in the ruins? un brano dalla durata prossima ai dodici minuti, un intro di pianoforte e loop elettronici segnano la prima parte del brano, che a sorpresa si apre in un feroce riff con tanto di voce in screaming. Ottimo il lavoro delle chitarre, che a volte richiamano un doom funereo altre volte sembrano richiamare i Katatonia del duemila. Sicuramente un buon modo per aprire l?album, che continua con ?Darken the Skies? il suo percorso segnato da un incedere lento ma pesante. Qui la voce del singer spazia dal growl allo screaming rendendo molto varia l?atmosfera del brano, e come nella traccia precedente anche qui troviamo posto per aperture melodiche mai eccessive. Con la terza traccia ci troviamo di fronte ad un intermezzo di due minuti che divide in due l?album. Le ultime tre canzoni proseguono sulla stessa onda cavalcata dai brani precedenti, spaziando su atmosfere tanto care ad altre band scandinave come Swallow The Sun o Tyranny. Comunque ? sicuramente un buon esordio questo ?Echoes? In The Ruins? consigliato vivamente agli amanti di queste sonorit?.

The conventional piano intro on Echoes... In the ruins from Finish Dead in the water does not raise many eyebrows, and the midtempo doom/death metal that follows is not full of surprises either. But the album contains several good guitar leads, and it is reasonably varied. The production is also acceptable. As opposed to many releases in the genre, there are hardly any keyboards present on the album, which does not matter at all.

So far, so good. Now, let us focus on the negative sides of the album. First of all, the vocals ruin a lot. Neither the screams nor the growls are any good, and therefore an instrumental album would be preferable. There is also room for improvement in the song writing, and finally, Dead in the water is not exactly breaking new ground here.

In summary, this is a decent debut which is held down by a weak vocal performance. The band has some good ideas, and subsequent releases might be worth keeping an eye out for.

Per una band che ? stata un anno senza essere in grado di trovare un nome appropriato credo che la scelta infine effettuata possa essere ritenuta pi? che soddisfacente, dal momento che esprime appieno il significato sonoro del quintetto finlandese, che ha impiegato quasi tutto il nuovo millennio sinora trascorso per mettere appunto un sound gi? maestoso, nonostante ?Echoes... In The Ruins? sia il lavoro di debutto per i Dead In The Water. E l?immagine di un corpo, di donna (forse di quella stessa donna il cui viso capeggia in copertina), che galleggia sull?acqua ormai privo di vita, dopo essere stato dato per disperso da una settimana, in un contesto ambientale naturale grigio tendente al verde salmastro, ? la miglior successione di fotogrammi che si possano materializzare nella vostra mente pensando al suono del gruppo. Un suono che devo definire death/doom, ma che sarebbe meglio rappresentato da una descrizione tipo: ?interminabile processione di anime defunte dopo terribili patimenti e talmente indebolite, anche in quanto anime stesse, da avere solo un barlume di forza necessaria per cercare di raggiungere la meta definitiva, quella della dannazione eterna?. Splendidi passaggi di melodica ambientazione malinconico/decadente abbinati a poderose, portentose e disperate avanzate strumentali scolpite nel granito e sempre supportate da una voce costantemente brutale. So benissimo che l? fuori ci sono innumerevoli formazioni dedite a tali sonorit?, ma vi posso garantire che per Dead In The Water il mix tra forme espressive mortifere, soluzioni lente/funeste e orecchiabilit? gotica raggiunge elevatissimi livelli espressivi, anche in virt? di una chiara ascendenza di certo esercitata dai Neurosis.

Dead In The Water is a Finnish act and the bands musical roots lies deep in the hardcore/punk scene. But hardcore/punk is not what the band delivers on this album. Instead my ears are filled with some kind of strange mix of slow grinding doom and death metal/punk/hardcore. There are also some really long parts that are strictly instrumental and to make it even blurrier they have added death metal vocals to it all.

All of the 6 tracks on the album are a complete mess and the length of the album, 45 minutes, is enough to drive me crazy in every possible kind of way. The songs are long, boring and contain whispering, black metal, death metal and hissing vocals. They all sound totally similar and are hard to separate from each other.

The only thing I got from this album was a serious headache and if I were you I would think twice before you listen to this album. Don?t forget that I have warned you...

Si naces en Finlandia y empiezas una carrera musical, es muy probable que, a pesar de que tengas la ilusi?n de encaminarte hacia sonidos Hardcore e incluso Punk, acabes volcado en los sonidos m?s depresivos y oscuros y, por supuesto, contratado por Firefox para su secuaz Firedoom. La cantidad y calidad que maneja este sello merece una menci?n y DEAD IN THE WATER es, una vez m?s, un fichaje de importancia.

Y el caso es que este grupo ten?a con la mosca tras la oreja al conservador censor que uno lleva dentro. Por sus citados or?genes musicales, inicialmente bajo el nombre de SHARPVILLE, e incluso por el extra?o artwork, con una reminiscencia Emo que pone r?pidamente en guardia a los que tenemos el coraz?n sensible con este asunto. Por suerte, al final lo que queda y lo que manda es la m?sica, y DITW es un grupo de presente y, sobre todo, futuro.

Tomemos como ejemplo ?The Silent Will Carry On?, buque insignia del disco, once minutos con los que el grupo presenta su propuesta, sienta sus reales estil?sticos y, sobre todo, da lo mejor de s? mismo. Tras una introducci?n de piano se desarrolla una opresiva avalancha de Doom / Death con efluvios post Hard Core en las guitarras, un miasma de oscuridad densa y angustiosa, con ritmos aplastantes y desarrollos repetitivos e hipn?ticos. Las melod?as aportan la sintaxis desgarradora, alejadas de la accesibilidad y obviedad de la vertiente m?s cl?sica del estilo; m?s reptantes y venenosas. Adem?s, las cadencias crecen en la parte central con aires de potencia Death. Esta descarnada y kilom?trica suite es lo mejor del disco, una muestra del potencial que atesora este particular grupo.

Se agradece que DITW marque su propio camino y no entre en la corriente m?s fluida y habitual del Doom / Death escandinavo, un estilo que, todo sea dicho, sigue dando perpetuamente bandas y discos maravillosos. Eso no quiere decir que no haya influjos tradicionales en la m?sica (bastante claros en la primera parte de ?Burden?) en l?nea con, por ejemplo, SWALLOW THE SUN. Sin embargo, es poderoso el poso de bandas como NEUROSIS, ISIS, o incluso THE OCEAN o ZATOKREV. En este cruce de caminos, DEAD IN THE WATER puede crecer y forjar un sonido absolutamente interesante.

Las voces, con un Lonnqvist inclemente apoyado por las apariciones de Lehtinen, generan un infierno profundo y gutural, casi siempre de crudeza Death y a veces en un rasgu?o de una intensidad casi Black. Las guitarras de Maltari y el propio Lehtinen fluyen en un hervidero rocoso y abrasivo, dejando que las melod?as florezcan lo justo en un paisaje devastador, un desierto que transmite un?vocas sensaciones: tristeza, dolor y una oscuridad pegajosa, casi masticable. El sonido, con una producci?n perfecta, es terrible, agresivo. ?Darken The Skies? resuena como un eco claustrof?bico cargado una tristeza ?cida, sin ?pice de romanticismo, un ?spero ogro de Doom / Death que se agarra a las entra?as.

La linealidad del disco apenas queda retorcida por el breve interludio ???, que cumple a nivel funcional, o con la m?s experimental ?In Disguises?, de desarrollo atmosf?rico y aterrador roto por los breves estallidos de Death / HC antes de un crescendo puramente agresivo. DEAD IN THE WATER sabe hacer m?sica bestial pero sensitiva, ?ntima pero ?pica, elaborada pero b?sica. Y emocional, por supuesto, ya que el coraz?n de este disco es Doom / Death, y, por lo tanto, la emoci?n es la esencia absoluta. Para entenderlo basta con escuchar ?Emptiness Inside? con sus riffs melanc?licos y desnudos: intensa, lenta, triste, con explosiones de garra y potencia.

Este es el presente de DEAD IN THE WATER. Un disco debut con impacto, personalidad y una oscuridad opresiva. Una muesca m?s de los buenos frutos que puede dar la uni?n del Doom / Death cl?sico con la vena instigadora de ISIS y similares. Por supuesto, la propuesta es radical y s?lo apta para seguidores ac?rrimos de estos sonidos. Son seis canciones en 45 minutos de m?sica nunca amable o accesible. Queda el futuro, al que me refer?a al principio. ?Echoes In The Ruins? muestra a un grupo joven, todav?a en crecimiento y, en su caso, en pleno remate de un profundo proceso de transformaci?n. Por eso espero que el grupo termine de pulir y dar madurez definitiva a su propuesta. Si lo consigue, su nombre dar? mucho que hablar en el futuro. Por ahora, consigue resultar mucho m?s convincente de lo que yo mismo hab?a imaginado. Merece la atenci?n de los seguidores de Doom / Death combinado con la vanguardia post Hardcore. En definitiva, una sorpresa oscura, opresiva y aplastante.

Con un Artwork en digipack algo raro y de c?nones est?ticos poco convencionales, empaquetan su segundo disco los fineses Dead In The Water a trav?s de Firebox (Firedoom Music). Nos podemos hacer una idea, entonces, de como ha sido el trabajo final del estudio de grabaci?n: sonido impecable. Y se agradece. Se agradece porque ciertos matices del CD no hubieran sido percibidos como debe ser si el sonido hubiera sido m?s sucio.
El ?lbum desde luego no es para escucharlo antes de irse de juerga, es deprimente hasta decir basta. Esto lo acerca bastante al Doom, pero el tipo de acordes usados nos recordar?n en ocasiones a grupos como Isis o Neurosis, con guitarras muy unidas a la bater?a. Por tanto podemos hablar de un disco de Doom moderno, muy lento, pesado, ag?nico, deprimente y todo tipo de adjetivos al uso.
Aqu? es donde entra en juego la primera caracter?stica y quiz? su baza m?s importante: el sentimiento. Este disco de down-tempo como dicen los guiris, est? lleno de sentimiento, de tristeza m?s concretamente, que te envuelve desde el principio en su lenta cadencia r?tmica acentuada por las melod?as de guitarra. Aunque fineses de nacimiento se alejan de su propia escuela, plagada de melod?as bonitas que atrapan al oyente desde el principio, ?Echoes? in ruin? es un disco para escuchar, y escuchar, y escuchar? y precisamente por esa carencia de melod?as facilonas y bonitas, hay que entender sus melod?as fr?as, r?tmicas y emotivas, si, emotivas, pero no bonitas y resultonas a las que nos tienen acostumbrados gran cantidad de los grupos de su pa?s. Su apuesta es dif?cil y de vez en cuando intercalan alg?n riff y alguna melod?a, a mi gusto, inexpresivas o mejor dicho, fuera de lugar.
La distorsi?n juega un papel muy importante desde el punto de vista minimalista, consiguen transmitir mucho tan s?lo con acordes al aire, con ese ruido que provoca la distorsi?n. Pero tambi?n se atreven a coquetear con guitarras limpias muy de vez en cuando y en alguna ocasi?n muy puntual como al comienzo del disco, con pianos. Las partes de guitarra limpia rompen totalmente la l?gica interna de esta banda, rompen con toda su homogeneidad, con todo lo bueno y lo malo que conlleva esto, pero sinceramente, creo que estas aportaciones son las justas y necesarias, consiguen darle una vuelta de tuerca a su m?sica y si fueran m?s intervenciones de este tipo interrumpir?an demasiado esa cadencia r?tmica de la que habl?bamos antes, algo hipn?tica en ciertos casos.
La voz se desplaza a un segundo plano y digo esto porque m?s de una vez nos sorprender? saber que el cantante lleva un rato cantando y ni nos hab?amos dado cuenta, y eso que las l?neas vocales son variadas, a caballo entre un registro grave y otro agudo, siempre gutural. Pero en general podemos decir que gozan de bastantes partes instrumentales.
That?s all folks, como dec?a aquel. Un buen disco que gustar? especialmente a los amantes del Doom m?s depresivo y melanc?lico y tambi?n a seguidores de bandas como Isis.

Ok, I just have to calm down. What if this album comes from Firebox and its title is "Echoes... In The Ruins"? What?s the big deal? I am just suspicious thinking that it will be a whiny Doom/Death Metal band with lyrics having to do with death and how miserable life is. I will have to listen to the album first and then judge. Ok, here it goes. Please God help me.

DEAD IN THE WATER is a Finnish act (I think you already realized that by the members? names), which was formed in 2000. Even though they were a Hardcore band earlier, they soon changed their style into a more Doom/Death Metal outfit (that?s what their bio says, I don?t want to believe until I listen to the album). They have released two EP?s until now, both through Thrash And Burn. As it seems, this is their debut album and Firebox is the label to release it.

So, when I started to listening to the album I had to face the harsh truth. This album is exactly what I expected it to be, a whiny Doom/Death Metal album full of slower than a replay tempo and endless intros. I mean I had to bare boring and endless intros just to listen to the main part of the songs, which was equally boring! Are there really people who listen to this music? Heavy riffs, a decent rhythm section and a wannabe Black/Death Metal voice are the ingredients of this recipe. I swear to God (Phil Anselmo) that if this album was a kind of food I wouldn?t even touch it!

So, here?s the deal. If your family just got killed by some lunatic, your house got burned down and the love of your life is gay, this album will definitely be a good companion to you.

Po wysłuchaniu tej płyty byłem mocno zdziwiony tym, że zesp?ł zaczynał swą muzyczną przygodę od łączenia metalu i hard core... Jak na prawdziwych Fin?w przystało zesp?ł szybko podążył w mroczne rejony muzyczne. Ich debiutancki album gwarantuje niezbyt optymistyczną i wesołą podr?ż w świat dźwięk?w. To melancholijny album, na kt?rym zawarto mn?stwo muzyki skłaniającej słuchacza do zadumy. Są momenty kiedy wycisza. Bywa r?wnież agresywny i mocno doom/death metalowy. W muzyce DEAD IN WATER doświadczyć można dość częstych zmian nastroju i atmosfery. Dominuje smutek i niepok?j. Partie elektroakustyczne występują w symbiozie z tymi ciężkimi, stricte metalowymi. Jest to zgrabnie napisana muzyka, z niezłym wyczuciem i odpowiednim zaangażowaniem. Inteligentnie zostały zaaranżowane wokale. Na płycie usłyszeć można tylko blekowy skrzek lub klasyczny growl, kt?re pojawiają się tylko w ciężkich i agresywnych momentach, co sprawia, że te łagodniejsze skłaniają słuchacza do głębszej refleksji. Kiedy gitary smutnie zawodzą kojarzą mi się trochę z KATATONIA... "Echoes... In the Ruins" to niezły album, a mając na względzie fakt, że jest to pierwsza duża płyta zespołu - jest więcej niż nieźle.

Het Finse Firebox label heeft er weer een leuk paradepaardje bij. In het verleden heeft dit label al meermaals bewezen een neusje voor goeie bands te hebben en opnieuw hebben ze een behoorlijk interessante band binnengehaald. Ooit begonnen als hardcore band heeft het Finse Dead in the Water het tempo in de loop van de jaren behoorlijk omlaaggeschroefd. Het is tegenwoordig vooral doom wat de klok slaat. Maar daar is zeker niet alles mee gezegd.

De band brengt namelijk beslist geen standaard doom. Okee, de nummers zijn lang, traag en voortslepend, maar toch is de sfeer net even wat anders dan op de meest gangbare platen binnen het genre. Dead in the Water zit meer in het straatje oude Throes of Dawn, maar dan zonder de slepende gitaarmelodie?n. Vermeng dit met een vleugje postrock a la hun andere landgenoten Callisto en af en toe een afgewaaide My Dying Bride of oude The Gathering riff en je weet ongeveer hoe dit gezelschap klinkt. De productie is best wel rauw voor doombegrippen, net als de zang, welke vooral uit screams bestaat, afgewisseld met een sporadische droge grunt. De screams in combinatie met de productie geeft de muziek best wel een zwart randje mee, iets wat er voor zorgt dat veel liefhebbers van slepende black metal misschien ook wel wat met dit werkje kunnen. Minpuntje aan deze productie vind ik wel de drums; deze hadden iets opvallender in de mix gemogen.

Vijf redelijk lang uitgestrekte nummers plus een tussendoortje vormen samen dit Echoes...in the Ruins. Een plaat waarmee deze Finnen een behoorlijke indruk achterlaten. Ik denk zelfs dat ze nog veel beter kunnen dan ze hier laten horen, maar dit debuutalbum geeft al aan dat dit best een aardig grote naam in het genre kan gaan worden. Mensen die wel raad weten met dit soort donkere, slepende muziek moeten beslist eens een luisterbeurtje wagen.

Being active since 2000 in Finland, DEAD IN THE WATER based their music in hardcore/punk roots, however as time went by, they decided to take a darker approach and changed their style to mid-to-slow tempo metal with some hardcore bursts. Impressive change decision?!

What should be stated here is that their attempt leans towards doom/death metal fields, combining extreme atmospheric vocals along with dark melodies providing an almost scary and unbearable result at some parts. Basically it is the melancholic mood of the album that haunts the environment. Personally it reminded me bands such as Burzum as far as the overall concept is concerned. No, they do not sound like them, but the spirit of the album reveals similarities with songs like ?Dunkelheit?, in a more doomy style. The production of the album is good, with clearly played guitar melodies and harmonies accompanied by bass and drums in the background. L?k??s voice is fantastic, acting as a bad tuned instrument giving a more pessimistic attitude to the compositions. The cover artwork is interesting implying more mysticism to the result whereas the entire CD has a strange design.

Even though this is their debut album, the finish band seems to have attained a clear direction of what their purpose is. Their sound is rigid and sometimes old fashioned but at the same time fresh and innovative, resulting in a vanguard style of play.

Consisted of only 6 tracks the album reaches duration of more than 45 minutes, without losing its general music concept.

From ?The Silent Will Carry On? which is a dark death metal hymn, until the ?Burden? which is the last track of the album, ?Echoes?In The Ruins? will blacken your heart and raise your adrenaline in many parts. This strange mixture of doom/death elements to hardcore will definitely catch the attention of the fans of the above genres.

Denne relativt pussige digipacken dukket overraskende nok opp fra finske Firebox, som tidligere har gitt ut gullplater fra b?de Tyranny og Swallow The Sun. I de senere ?r har de desverre m?ket mye bajs p? markedet, men det virker som at etter de delte opp i sublabelen Firedoom kontra hovedselskapet Firebox, s? har kvaliteten tatt seg opp.

Dead In The Water skiller seg en smule ut fra selskapets andre band, med tanke p? at dette er mer orientert mot post-doom / post-rock. ? operere innen dette landskapet er nok en voksende trend, og de habile bandene m? nok lide under det faktum at en skremmende mengde med band har begynt ? operere i denne gata. Det har ramlet mye s?nn innom redaksjonen her de siste par ?ra, men det er og blir bare noen postrock / doom- band jeg virkelig tenner p?, blant andre Cult of Luna, Callisto, Isis og Neurosis. Selv om jeg synes Isis har tapt seg litt p? de siste par platene.

Enkelte av disse banda h?res ut som noe som er jamma opp i studio, og faktum er at mye av den erketypiske musikken innen denne sjangeren er gjerne det f?rste som dukker opp n?r man setter seg ned og jammer med andre folk. Mange hyller nok disse tidvis endel?se l?tstrukturene som geniale, men faktum er at det oftest er ganske billig l?sning p? l?tskrivninga.

Dead In The Water har heldigvis styrt unna de aller verste fallgruvene. De har et umisgjenkjennelig knallhardt og kompromissl?st demopreg over seg. Ikke at det l?ter amat?rmessig, men det l?ter ekte, genuint - massivt. Produksjonen er ikke perfekt, men det trenger den heller ikke ? v?re. Bandet har ogs? spart litt p? detaljene i lydbildet, og overlater oss med til tider supersolide riff og str?lende melodibruk. Less is more, er det noe som heter, og det vet Dead In The Water ? dra nytte av. Et annet ess dette bandet har i ermet, er vokalisten, som har en spesiell og veldig effektiv vokal. Den passer utmerket til denne typen musikk ? organisk og herlig.

Er du svak for doom, og kan t?le en dose med postrock, s? er ikke dette s? alt for verst. Sjekk det ut. Solid melankoli!

Ok, machen wir ein kleines Ratespielchen: Was t?nt d?ster, depressiv und kommt aus n?rdlich gelegeneren Regionen dieser Welt? Richtig, Finnland zum was weiss ich wievielten Male. Da muss doch irgendwo ein Nest sein..., egal. Z?hfl?ssig tropft eine Mischung aus Death und Doom Metal aus meinen Boxen, die stark an die sp?ten 80er und die fr?hen 90er erinnert und stellenweise wie die allererste Cemetary-Scheibe klingt. Allerdings nicht ganz so flott, sondern mehr mit doomigen Sprengseln der Marke November's Doom oder gar Dolorian versehen. So weit so gut, mag man sich jetzt denken. Aber was kann eine Scheibe komplett versauen und einem jegliche Lust verderben, einen weiteren Kaffee zu schl?rfen? Exakt, die Vocals. Und die sind auf "Echoes... In The Ruins" ein echtes Problem. Sie passen schlichtwegs nicht. Manchmal growlig und todesmetall-lastig, dann wieder an schwarzemtallisches Gekreische erinnernd... - Leute, entweder ihr kombiniert die Sachen so, dass es schlussendlich auch einen Sinn ergibt, oder ihr lasst die Experimente und einigt euch auf einen einzigen Stil. So bleiben die eigentlich sehr sch?nen D?stermucke-Melodien alleine als Aush?ngeschild zur?ck, wobei man hier schon wieder von progressivem Vorgehen sprechen mag, denn keines der St?cke, mit Ausnahme des instrumentalen Teiles, geht unter sechseinhalb Minuten und bietet handwerklich mehr als solide Kost, wenngleich auch stellenweise ein wenig zu simpel und vorhersehbar, daf?r aber im n?chsten Moment wieder mit einer unerwarteten Wendung zuschlagend. Was bleibt jetzt von diesem Deb?t? Ein seltsames Gef?hl, nicht so schlecht, als dass man die Scheibe aus dem n?chsten Fenster schmeissen m?chte, aber auch nicht wirklich gut genug, um ihr einen festen Platz im CD-Regal sichern zu k?nnen. Wenn sich Dead In The Water mal einigen k?nnen, was sie jetzt wirklich machen wollen, d?rfte das Resultat auch um einiges besser ausfallen. Das K?nnen w?re auf jeden Fall vorhanden.

Wer das Label Firedoom h?rt, der wei? bescheid. Das Unterlabel von Firebox hat sich zur Aufgabe gemacht m?glichst viele depressive finnischen Landsleute unter die Fittiche zu bekommen, um die endg?ltige Weltherrschaft der melancholischen Langsamkeit unter Dach und Fach zu bringen. Das aktuelle Gesch?tz, das auf Mitteleuropa ausgerichtet wurde nennt sich DEAD IN THE WATER, was alleine vom Namen her schon vermuten l?sst, das der gemeine Finne das Lachen nur aus dem Fernsehen her kennt.

Und so wird auch hier recht schnell klar, das ''Echoes... In The Ruins'' alles an den Tag legt, um den Auftrag seiner suizidgef?hrdeten Herrschaft gerecht zu werden. Tr?ge walzen sich hier Soundmassen von der einen auf die andere Seite. Zwar wird immer wieder eine geh?rige Portion Death Metal mit in die Masse aufgenommen, aber schneller und zug?nglicher macht es die Musik nicht. Im Hintergrund brummt ein fieser Bass, der die tiefgestimmten Gitarren dazu ermuntert alle gef?hlten 10 Minuten mal ein Riff in die Atmosph?re zu schleudern. Ab und an ert?nen in dieser Grabesstimmung vereinzelte Vocals, die sich aber auch von der L?nge her im Zaum halten, sodass man im Prinzip schon fast von Instrumental Doom reden k?nnte.

Wer sich bisher noch nie an Doom Metal rangetraut hat, der wird eine CD wie ''Echoes... In The Ruins'' von der ersten Minute an einfach nur abgrundtief hassen. Jeder, der die selbstzerst?rerische Phase bereits hinter sich gelassen hat, ohne sich gleich die Pulsadern aufzuschlitzen, der wird hier ein weiteres St?ck tragischer finnischer Doomkultur finden, die zwar nicht viel Neues bieten kann (wenn das in diesem Genre ?berhaupt noch m?glich ist). Wenn die finstere Unheiligkeit dann auch noch auf eine mehr als ordentliche Produktion trifft, dann kann man nur noch zum Zugreifen raten.

Eine sanfte Pianomelodie erklingt beim Beginn des Openers THE SILENT WILL CARRY ON, um bald in schleppenden Down-Tempo Metal zu wechseln. Keine Frage, diese Band kann nur aus Nordeuropa kommen, aus Finnland, an dessen Nordspitze im Winter die Sonne f?r 51 Tage kein einziges Mal ?ber den Horizont steigt. Das 2000 gegr?ndete Quintett DEAD IN THE WATER hat ihre Hardcore/Punk Wurzeln im Dickicht der Suomiw?lder verscharrt, eine 7" EP und ein 10"/MCD Minialbum hinter sich gelassen, und betreten jetzt mit dem Debut "Echoes... In The Ruins" die Waldeslichtung. Wobei alles was mit Licht zu tun hat, bei DEAD IN THE WATER vollkommen falsch angesiedelt ist. Dahinziehender, z?her Sound, depressive Melodien und growlig bis teilsch kreischende Vocals f?hren den H?rer in die tiefsten Abgr?nde der finstersten Waldesschluchten. Eigentlich sollte man diese Scheibe nur im Herbst/Winter h?ren, wenn dickster Nebel Stadt und Land umh?llt, Raureif die Natur bedeckt, und vorwiegend Dunkelheit herrscht. Aber zum Gl?ck gibt es Sommergewitter, zu deren Stimmung "Echoes... In The Ruins" ebenfalls perfekt passt. Und sollte sich gerade ein Doom-Fan von der Erde verabschieden (was ich nat?rlich niemand w?nsche!), dann empfehle ich DARKEN THE SKIES oder den Kurztrack "...", ein 1.48 Min Mini-Trauersong, der nach der Grabrede den w?rdigen Abschluss einer Beerdigung darstellt. Vergesst Eure Suizid-Gedanken, denn tot verpasst Ihr eine der schw?rzesten Slow-Doom und Down-Tempo Metal Scheiben aus Suomi.

In slechts een paar jaar tijd heeft Firebox Records en het sublabel Firedoom Records zich weten uit te bouwen tot een van de beste en consequente platenmaatschappijen inzake doom metal. Zelden komt er een misser langs en overal scoren releases van dit label hoge cijfers. En ook na de eerste twee minuten van Echoes ?In The Ruins weet je al dat de nieuwe band Dead In The Water wederom een aardige aanwinst is.

De heren spelen typische Finse doom die wel traag en slepend is, maar die nooit de song uit het oog verliest. Alweer een band die in min of meer het zelfde water zwemt, maar gelukkig worden de meubelen gered door de zanger die met zijn death ?n black-achtige vocalen de sound een scherp randje meegeeft. De geconstrueerde spanningsbogen werken allemaal en met opener The Silent Will Carry On hebben ze alvast een song te pakken die in het daglicht mag staan van het beste werk van Swallow The Sun en My Shamefull. Het is misschien jammer nieuws met het oog op de zomer, maar dit is toch weer een bandje dat de doom metalliefhebber tenminste ??n maal moet uitgecheckt hebben.

As I just reviewed a Finnish doom metal band that has been laid to rest (Minotauri), here?s one that?s just starting to get back in action. Dead In The Water is their name and Echoes? In The Ruins is their debut album. Let?s find out whether this is a worthy addition to the Finnish doom scene.

I had trouble really getting into this album, but (as usual) the more I listened to it the more it got to me. I found out why it was a bit hard to get to the core of their music, because the roots of this band are in the punk/hardcore scene, which is still a bit noticeable from time to time. The music of course is heavy as fuck depressing and raw funeral doom metal, but just the addition of that word raw makes this record a whole lot more appealing for me. Unpolished heaviness versus melancholic melodies, accompanied by a nasty, almost crust-like scream. Perhaps one of the first minor-chord doom metal bands that I?m really impressed by. And all that for a debut album!

Of course the heaviness sometimes subsides for some clean parts, which are just as depressing as the heavy ones I might say. So all in all there?s more than enough variation on the record as well, implicating that these guys know what they?re doing. I can only hope that they get a second record out as soon as possible, because I?m curious what this band will do in the next couple of years. Might be pretty big, might disappear into obscurity, time will tell us. A European tour by these guys would be nice as well, but that's just a bit too much wishful thinking I?d say.

?Echoes? In The Ruin? ist nach einer Single und einer Mini nun das Deb?talbum der Finnen Dead In The Water. Von den eher hardcorelastigen Sounds der Anfangstage hat sich die Kombo immer mehr in Richtung Doom trifft auf Postrock entwickelt. Beides nicht gerade innovativ, wenn man mal bedenkt in welchem zeitlichen Rahmen dies geschah. N?mlich genau dann, wann diese Stile angesagt waren bzw. sind.
Zu Gute Halten muss man dem Quintett allerdings, das es versucht aus dem Einheitsbrei der Genrever?ffentlichungen zu entfliehen. Neben den gewohnten schleppenden melancholischen Parts, der Laut-/ Leisedynamik werden metallisch treibende Parts in die Songs integriert, die das Songwriting auflockern und so Langeweile vermeiden. Des weiteren stellt S?nger L?k? mehr oder weniger eine Ausnahme in dem Genre dar, da sein Gesang ?u?erst Black Metal-lastig ist.
An die Intensit?t von Isis, Cult Of Luna kommen Dead In The Water zwar nicht ran, aber ich habe schon wesentlich schlechter Scheiben geh?rt.

Firebox beweisen einmal mehr mit dem Signing von Dead In The Water ein gutes H?ndchen. Irgendwo passt die Musik schon gut in die doomige Labelpolitik. "Echoes ... In The Ruins" ist ein d?steres Machwerk, das gern mit Black Metal Elementen lieb?ugelt und durch seine auff?llige K?lte sehr ?berzeugend daherkommt.

Es ist wirklich krass, welche Dichte und be?ngstigende Ausstrahlung das Album besitzt. So f?hlt man sich in die Eisesk?lte gezwungen und erlebt quasi den Tod durch Ertrinken mit. Rein musikalisch h?lt man sich etwa mittig zwischen g?ngigen Doom Spielarten und Versuchen die Grenzen aufzuheben. Das Ergebnis wirkt vielleicht nicht gleich im ersten Moment so erdr?ckend, gewinnt aber mit jeder neuen Rotation an Intensit?t. Doom Freunde werden das Album sicher sehr m?gen lernen, auch wenn es rein objektiv gesehen hier keine Weltver?ndernen Sachen gibt, schafft es die Band gut Ihre eigene Nische zu erkunden und die Grenzen auszuloten und zu durchbrechen.

Dazu kommt ein sehr b?ser ? oft an Black Metal erinnernder Gesang, der "Echoes ... In The Ruins" noch den letzten Schliff zum B?sen verleiht. Alles in allem f?r das erste komplette Album eine sehr reife Leistung. Ausgesch?pft hat die Truppe ihr Potential sicher noch lange nicht und man darf gespannt sein auf das, was noch kommen mag. Bis dahin jedoch kann man mit diesem Release gern Vorlieb nehmen und sich an der Finnischen Trauerkultur nur w?rmstens erfreuen.

Groupe finlandais form? en 2000, DEAD IN THE WATER ?tait ? l?origine plut?t tourn? vers le hardcore/punk, pour s?orienter sur ce premier album vers un metal compl?tement atypique, ? savoir un doom d?brid?. Comme quoi l?originalit? peut ?tre pr?sente, pourvu que l?on soit cr?atif et musicien dans l??me.

Premi?re impression avec le visuel, qui est peu commun et pas franchement esth?tique, mais cela colle avec leur style ? vrai dire. Puis, les premi?res notes : une excellente production, et un son exceptionnel. Enfin, le premier titre ? the silent will carry on ?, et une intro au piano qui r?sonne dans les brumes doomesques qui nous attendent. Ce titre dure 11 minutes ( du doom quoi !) mais O miracle, quel monument sonore ! Pass? le piano ? qui va bien ?, on se prend des riffs de guitares ultra plomb?s dans les gencives, avec une basse bien lourde et massive, et un chant qui est souvent doubl? simultan?ment avec du black et du death. Le tempo est au ralenti mais sans provoquer l?envie de s?endormir, loin de l?. L?ensemble est tellement massif et prenant que l?on d?guste chaque note jusqu?? plus soif. Parfois le rythme acc?l?re quelques peu, le tout est tr?s m?lodique malgr? cette avalanche sonore. Puis parfois on fr?le l?atmosph?rique dark, et rien que le premier titre met l?eau ? la bouche. A vrai dire, heureusement que ce groupe ? laiss? de cot? le hardcore et le punk pour nous livrer cet opus gigantesque !

Mais vous n?avez encore rien vu, car le plus grand vient par la suite avec notamment le titre ? in disguises ? plomb? et t?n?breux, qui nous plonge dans un univers franchement lugubre et intense. La musique est lente, plut?t discr?te?mais c?est pour mieux vous surprendre avec d?un coup d?un seul, des hurlements venus des fin fonds des enfers, puis un solos magistral ? la guitare pendant que la basse commence ? fumer et englobe le tout avec un son unique. Personnellement, je peux repasser ce titre en boucle sans jamais que les frissons ne cessent?

Bien entendu, cet album vous livrera bien d?autres surprises, mais ? vrai dire, restera pour moi le meilleur album de doom ? progressif ? ? ce jour, avec une basse qui r?sonne encore dans mon casque et qui me fait dire que ce groupe n?a pas fini de faire parler de lui, en esp?rant que les adeptes du styles se penchent sur cet opus monumental.

Nyt hommat ovat rev?ht?neet k?siin ja hissuttelua tulee ovista ja ikkunoista, mutta silti tuo Less Days... on ep?s??nn?llisen s??nn?llisesti py?rinyt stereoissani t?t? debyytti t?yslaidallista odottaessa. Kauanhan siin? meni, mutta nyt se on edess?ni ja oloni on kuin pedofiilill? alastoman pikkupojan edess?: tuskastuneen kiihoittunut. Apparently Dead in the Water started out as a hardcore band before moving into a more doomy direction. The first thing that comes to mind when I hear this is Neurosis (although Switchblade has also made this move). Does Dead in the Water sound like Neurosis and the numerous acts that Neurosis has inspired (e.g. Isis, Cult of Luna, ...)? Yes, a bit. Compared to the aforementioned names, Dead in the Water edges more towards standard doom/death metal. But unlike a run of the mill doom/death metal act, Dead in the Water feels considerably less, well, run of the mill. I am not entirely sure why this is the case. At least this Finnish band do not fall in the trap of using the same old riffs every doom band seems to use and they succeed in maintaining tension throughout their (long) songs. It is certainly a surprisingly good record. Perhaps the record closest to "Echoes... in the Ruins" is Buried Inside's "Chronoclast", which captures much of the same mood. Highly recommended listening for people who like "Chronoclast" and the Neurosis records like "Souls at Zero" and "Enemy of the Sun".

Κοίτα τι μπορεί να συμβεί στον κόσμο.

Έχεις μια μπάντα και παίζεις hardcore punk. Τα παρατάς και με τα ίδια μέλη (πλήν ενός) δημιουργείς μια νέα που παίζει? βασανιστικό doom metal με τις ταχύτητες να είναι στο χαμηλότερο δυνατό σημείο και τα ξεσπάσματα να είναι ακριβώς ό,τι σημαίνει η λέξη τους και πραγματικό βάλσαμο στα αυτιά μου! Τώρα πώς το κάνεις αυτό, ρωτήστε τους Φιλανδούς (τι λές τώρα? δεν το περιμένατε ε;) DEAD IN THE WATER.

To ντεμπούτο άλμπουμ της μπάντας, ?Echoes? in the ruins?, δεν είναι τίποτα άλλο παρά ένα αντιπροσωπευτικό δείγμα της ?παρέας? της Firedoom. Doom με αργόσυρτες μελωδίες σε σκοτεινά ηχοτόπια, brutal και τσιρίδες στα φωνητικά (αμφότερα πολύ καλά) και κομμάτια που κρατάνε? και κρατάνε και έχουν τον ατέλειωτο. 5 τραγούδια στην ουσία, διάρκειας 45 λεπτών νομίζω ότι τα λέει όλα. Δεν είναι κακοί πάντως.

Τώρα αν το γυρίσουν στο ?άτεχνο?-λαϊκό στο δεύτερο άλμπουμ τους, δεν το ξέρω.

"Kennst du Philippe Pag?s?" fragte der geduldige Herr im schwarzen Umhang. Der Blick seines Gegen?bers in Richtung Boden verriet dessen Ignoranz. "Er hat sich sp?ter in Richard Clayderman umbenannt." Jetzt d?mmerte es. Doch was wollte der bed?chtige Erdenb?rger ihm damit ausdr?cken? Was hatte das ganze mit dem Deb?t von Dead in the Water zu tun?

H?tte der grossartige Pianist sich in die schleppenden Regionen des Doom Metal hervorgewagt, so w?re es jedem Ignoranten klar geworden, wo der Zusammenhang liegt. Die Harmonie, die in die schwerm?tigen St?cken von Dead in the Water eingewoben ist, erinnert deutlich an die Dynamiken von Clayderman. Selbst die kurzen Klavierpassagen k?nnen vom Grossmeister selber stammen. Ansonsten gibt sich Dead in the Water jedoch ein grosses St?ck schleppender. Die Hardcore-Wurzeln des Quintetts sind beinahe vollst?ndig ausgemerzt. Einzig die kreischenden Lyrics lassen die Herkunft tief versteckt erahnen, sie erinnern mittlerweile allerdings mehr an schwarzst?hlerne Exzesse. St?ndig w?lzt sich der Tieft?ner im Hintergrund, w?hrenddem sich die Gitarren nur von Zeit zu Zeit ?ber den obligaten Groove hinauswagen. Wiederholungen werden zum Stilmittel und machen sich dabei nicht schlecht, zumal sich immer wieder wohlige Melodien bemerkbar machen. H?hepunkte ergeben sich immer dann, wenn die Wiederholungsmauern durchbrochen werden und die Dramaturgie eine Wende nimmt. Dies geschieht meistens in Form von Tempovariationen (von langsam zu sehr langsam) oder durch laut-leise Dynamiken. So finden sich auf "Echoes? in the ruins" sechs mehr als nur solide St?cke, die sich stolz zeigen lassen k?nnen.

Vielleicht muss man Philippe Pag?s nicht unbedingt kennen. Gleiches gilt f?r Dead in the Water. Wenn man sie aber h?rt, f?hlt man sich sogleich zu Hause: Es passiert nichts erschreckend Neuartiges, daf?r darf man sich im gewohnten Gebiet gem?tlich einrichten.

Echoes? in the ruins on hiomaton timantti, jolla on potentiaalia isommillekkin pelikentille. Toivottavasti l?yd?n Dead In The Waterin kes?ll? keikkailemasta, haluaisin nimitt?in kiitt?? Juudaksesta joka lupautui maksamaan laskuni ja uhrineitsyist? joiden avulla helluntaiheila unohtui.

A band with a name such as Dead in the Water could make people suspicious of possible emo core influences. Luckily, this is not the case: no hair combed over faces or whining about parents who just don't understand, here. After a tasteful piano intro that nicely sets the tone for the rest of the record, it immediately becomes clear what we are dealing with: wonderful doom metal with black and death metal styled vocals. And, while the doom genre in general has practically bogged down (almost literally) in a standard of one single droning chord every five minutes accompanied by slow, immeasurably low singing, Dead In The Water has looked for a more lively approach that on the whole has more variety than your run of the mill doom.

The band has looked in the right places, for the songs have an actual noticeable progression to them (contrary to some doom in which changes in speed, if there are any at all, are as perceptible as a glacier's movement), that, partly on account of a melodious slant, keep the listener's attention sufficiently. Added to this is the fact that it is not just doom and doom only that is played. 'Emptiness Inside', for example, has an intro that can easily be confused with something found on a pop album. From a very depressed band that is, but still. The same goes for the opening minute or so of the closing track 'Burden.' One could even go as far as to carefully state that the song '?' has an Ulveresque feel to it. 'Ehoes?In The Ruins' also reminds of Forgotten Tomb, but this thought reflects the guitar sound only.

Of course, the emphasis still is placed, according to the doom paradigm, on slow and dragging structures that are not meant to bring a smile to your face: this alone should appeal to fans of this subgenre. There is more to be found than straightforward doom, however: because of the variety, 'Echoes' will also please sludge enthusiasts and those who are into solid and abrasive but nuanced metal.

Es ist die v?llig falsche Jahreszeit f?r eine Platte wie "Echoes ... In The Ruins". Aber man kann sich ja auch im T-Shirt und bei aufkommendem Sonnenschein mies f?hlen. Und im Zweifelsfall geht man einfach nach Hause und zieht die Vorh?nge zu. DEAD IN THE WATER klingen genauso lebensfroh und spritzig, wie es der Bandname verspricht. Die Jungs machen Trauermarsch-Doom und w?rden es zu sch?tzen wissen, wenn der ganze Mist ein baldiges Ende finden und der Deckel endg?ltig draufgemacht w?rde. Nix mehr h?ren, nix mehr sehen. Hoffnung gibt es auf dem Erstling der Finnen-Finsterlinge nicht, Licht auch nicht, und wenn man regungslos in irgendeinem Teich schwimmt, hat man tats?chlich die perfekten Rahmenbedingungen geschaffen, um ihn sich anzuh?ren.

Anders als diverse Funeral-Doom-Suizidgef?hrdete transportiert das Quintett seine Todessehnsucht in etwas schnelleren Songvehikeln. Trotzdem ist h?chste Vorsicht geboten. Denn wer seine Haxen keine zwei Minuten stillhalten kann, wird beim Anh?ren der Scheibe immer noch ohne gr??ere Schwierigkeiten wahnsinnig werden. Vermutlich reicht daf?r auch schon der elfmin?tige Opener 'The Silent Will Carry On', der mit einer d?steren Pianopassage beginnt und danach schweren Riffs und Schrittes auf die tiefe, tiefe Schlucht zusteuert. Dass es im Schlurf-Genre nicht ausreicht, einfach nur so langsam zu spielen, wie es eben geht, haben DEAD IN THE WATER begriffen. Genau wie der, ?hem, Anheizer haben auch die anderen Nummern Dynamik. Gleichf?rmiges, desinteressiertes, in die eigene schlechte Laune verliebtes Geleier bleibt au?en vor, die Kompositionen haben Zug und biegen immer rechtzeitig ab, so dass der H?rer aufmerksam bleibt. Auch die Vocals tragen ihr Scherflein zum Reiz der Chose bei. ?berwiegend herrscht heiseres Gekr?chze vor, das auch gut zu 'nem schwarzmetallischen Kalkleistenhaufen aus dem Nadelwald des Vertrauens passen w?rde. Zu Beginn mag das vielleicht nicht so recht mit dem tristen Songmaterial harmonieren, hat man sich aber erst mal daran gew?hnt, macht dieser Kontrast durchaus den beklemmenden Charme der Platte aus.

DEAD IN THE WATER stellen mit ihrem Deb?t nichts Sensationelles auf die Beine (was im Death-Doom-Genre ohnehin nicht mehr m?glich ist). Aber wie eigentlich alle Bands auf dem Firebox-Unterlabel Firedoom haben auch diese gepeinigten Finnen ihre Qualit?ten, so dass die Depri-Gemeinde die noch verbliebenen Kraftreserven mobilisieren k?nnte, um "Echoes ... In The Ruins" irgendwo auf Tauglichkeit abzuklopfen.

Jos pit?isi mainita kaksi yhtyett?, olisi kyseess? varmaankin jonkinlainen Crowbarin ja Eyehategodin risteytys, joskin v?hemm?n grooveen ja enemm?n hitaaseen kynttil?tunnelmointiin kallellaan olevana. Sointuja k?ytet??n runsaasti ja riffit ovatkin enemm?n pitki? siveltimen vetoja sysimustalle kankaalle kuin r?iskyvi? ja v?rikk?it? melodiakuvioita. Laulajan tuskainen r??ynt? vie ilmett? enemm?n sinne mustan metallin ja sludgen suuntaan ja monissa kohdissa voisikin soittimessa olla jokin melodisen kalman edustaja. Hyv? n?in, sill? suuret kitaravallit, hitaat kompit ja ep?inhimilliset tuskankorahdukset erottavat yhtyeen musiikin harmaasta massasta.

Kuten asiaan kuuluu, on biiseille kertynyt mittaa ja 45 minuuttiin on saatu mahdutettua kokonaista kuusi kipaletta. Siivujen paksuudesta ja sis?isest? monimuotoisuudesta johtuen on kokonaisuudesta vaikea nostaa esiin selkeit? ?hittej??, vaan vahvuus onkin enemm?n painostavassa kokonaisuudessa, joka murskaa sekuntti sekunnilta ja minuutti minuutilta hilpe?t mielialat s??lim?tt?m?sti maan rakoon.

Olin jo l?hd?ss? ulos auringonpaisteesta nauttimaan, mutta Dead in the Water p??tti toisin ja nyt tekisi mieli vain sulkea verhot ja menn? s?ngylle makaamaan silm?t kiinni ja odottaa y?t? ja pimeytt?.

FireDoom Music, a subdivision of FireBox Records, has since its beginning in 2001 been known for bringing up may excellent doom metal bands. During the years they have been associated with well known acts like Swallow the Sun, Aarni, Grave Flowers, Manitou and Until Death Overtakes Me. Dead in the Water belong to FireDoom?s current rooster and Echoes... in the Ruins is their debut release.

Dead in the Water?s music has been described as being ?crust doom? by the label and many might start to wonder what the f*ck crust refers too. Crust or sludge doom is a mixture between doom metal and hardcore music. The lyrical themes are being deprived from crust's tendencies towards depression and the slow, extremely heavy rhythms of doom metal are combined with the shouting vocal delivery and occasional bursts of speed reminiscent of hardcore. This definition is exactly what Dead in the Water is all about; slow, mid-paced heavy guitars are creating sad, depressive and atmospheric moods.

Album opener The Silent Will Carry on starts off with beautifully played piano notes which instantly put one in a somber mood before the heavy guitars kick in and elucidate the world of doom. In being an eleven minute song some calmer and indie rock-like passages are introduced to create some variation and I?m immediately reminded of bands such as Cult of Luna, Neurosis and Isis.

Dead in the Water are succeeding in creating depressive and atmospheric moods, but in every track but number one I?m missing more variation and more haunting melodies. The constantly shouting vocals don?t do the trick with me either, and I feel Dead in the Water would be better off with more variation in the vocal department and consider to incorporate more of the great piano playing as heard on The Silent will Carry on and Burden. Echoes in the Ruins is still heavy recommended for the fans of less accessible genres of doom and/or depressive people generally ;-).

Suurin erottaja noihin edell? mainittuihin orkestereihin taitaa olla laulaja L?k?n blackmetallilta haiskahtava kirkumistyylinen huuto. Kulunut aika ei ole juuri muuttanut yhtyeen tyylillist? palettia, joka perustuu edelleen tutulle Neurosis ? Cult Of Luna akselille. This is obviously one of the best records in 2007 though its on cd, only. I like this kind of music a lot. Its heavy and doomy on the one side but still
hardcore on the other. Atmospheric moods changes into heavy slow mosh. Once again a scandinavian classic and bytheway much better than the latest Switchblade record.

Esta banda proviene de Finlandia y se form? en el 2000 de las cenizas de una banda de hardcore / punk denominada SHARPEVILLE. Cuatro de los cinco integrantes de esa banda buscaron un nuevo bajista y todo empez? a rodar de nuevo bajo el nombre de DEAD IN THE WATER. Este "Echoes... in the Ruins" es el disco debut (full length) de la banda luego de lanzar un 7" en el 2002 bajo el nombre de "Dead in the Water" y un mini-CD llamado "Less days left until the final rest".

Est? claro que el review de su disco no aparecer?a en nuestras p?ginas si su propuesta siguiera siendo la misma. La banda se aleja de ese hardcore / crust / punk del comienzo de su carrera para trasladarse de manera lenta pero segura, a unos tonos mas met?licos de orientaci?n doom. Igualmente no lo logran del todo y aqu? o all? se notan a?n sus influencias del Crust.

Pero esto no le hace mal a la placa, es solo un utensilio mas. La propuesta es chocante, depresiva y al mismo tiempo un tanto agresiva. Un ejemplo claro es el primer corte del disco "The Silent will carry On", que me recuerda en algunos momentos a los ya entablados SWALLOW THE SUN. En un principio se podr?a redondear de esa manera. Las melod?as est?n, las harmon?as tambi?n, pero lamentablemente la calidad de las mismas no es demasiado grande. Pero tampoco los apuremos, recien empiezan.

Si terminan de encontrar su estilo y si logran darle a?n mas profundidad a la propuesta, pueden transformarse en algo interesante de cara al futuro.

Fucking intense crust influenced gloom/sludge metal from Finland. This record is very different from their last, because it's much slower and soul-crushing, and features many truly haunting melodies. Fans of Neurosis, Old Man Gloom or Overmars will thoroughly enjoy this record.

Dead In The Water on kuitenkin virkaveljiens? nykykuntoon verrattuna julmetusti painostavampi ja raskaampi. Ensin mainitun albumi Salvation lienee l?hint? sukua Echoes? In The Ruinsille. Riipiv?n raskas kitaravalli yhdistettyn? melkeinp? black metalille ominaiseen r??kyn??n saa kananlihalle, hyv?ss? mieless?. Edes keskitempoiseksi ei homma kohoa miss??n vaiheessa, mutta silti ote ja intensiteetti s?ilyv?t tiukasti.
